Dragons abreast Cockburn Amazons
The Mighty Cockburn Amazons Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Team was founded in 2000 in support of a Canadian movement based on research, which refuted long-held beliefs about breast removal and lymphodema. It was long believed that lymphoedema, a painful swelling of the lymph area that occurs in many women who have had their lymph nodes removed during breast cancer surgery, was made worse with physical exercise, particularly strenuous and repetitive arm movements.
Dr Don McKenzie of Canada proved through his research this was not the case and an alliance of breast cancer survivors formed a dragon boat racing team to mark this positive finding.
Western Australia's Cockburn Amazons are members of Dragons Abreast which is run by the Breast Cancer Network Australia who are part of that original movement in Canada which has now spread globally. There is only one criteria for membership and that is you must have faced a diagnosis of breast cancer. Fitness level is no barrier. Supporters are welcome to train with the team but upon competitions priority will be given to breast cancer survivors.
The Cockburn team chose the name 'Amazons' after the Greek word meaning 'without breast'. Dragon Boat racing not only empowers sufferers of breast cancer but raises community awareness of the disease and gives the survivors a feeling of community.
The Amazons, members of the Cockburn Dragon Boat Club, train regularly at the East Fremantle Yacht Club. For more information contact Yvette Libregts on (08) 9305 2818 or email her at amazons@iprimus.com.au
